Hello! I’m Hala – the face behind Mama Ummi and a postpartum doula based in Launceston, Tasmania.

I was born and spent most of my childhood in Amman, Jordan, before moving to Australia in my early teenage years. The word ‘Ummi’ means mother in Arabic – it’s a little nod to my heritage.

A mother myself, I have lived experience in the postpartum world - and I know how deeply transformative this period of time is.

Why am I a postpartum doula? When I was pregnant, a wise person told me that every new parent has at least one ‘thing’ that they have to combat in postpartum.  However, I’ve met so many new parents who had not just one – but multiple – ‘things’ in postpartum. And underpinning them all was a lack of support.

My goal is to reduce the number of ‘things’ that new parents have to combat in postpartum. So many of them are avoidable, with the right support.

I support new parents across Northern Tasmania. A core aspect of my current postpartum offerings is providing attuned and responsive emotional support to parents, in particular by:

1. Holding compassionate space for a postpartum parent to debrief about their feelings, highs as well as challenges on any given day; and

2. Planning, preparing and guiding them through a range of reflective exercises and activities (e.g. journalling, art and mindfulness-based practices).

This is where I believe my strength as a postpartum professional lies and hence, where I can provide the most value to a postpartum parent.

Beyond that, my postpartum care responds to your needs and priorities, within the scope of a postpartum care and education professional. This may include support with practical tasks such as light housework or helping connect you with fellow like-minded families in your community and other local community resources.

When I’m not supporting new parents, I like to spend my time:

reading books and listening to podcasts (mainly – you guessed it – birth and postpartum-related, but I’m also partial to the odd fiction book!); exploring Tasmania with my husband and son; playing cards with my family and spending quality time with friends.

My friends describe me as:

Empathetic, caring and enchanting (!). But my favourite has got to be this description from a dear Chilean friend of mine: “Nefelibata”, which I am told roughly translates in English to “the one who walks the clouds”.
