Hello! I’m Hala – the face behind Mama Ummi and a postpartum doula based in Launceston, Tasmania.

I was born and spent most of my childhood in Amman, Jordan, before moving to Australia in my early teenage years. The word ‘Ummi’ means mother in Arabic – it’s a little nod to my heritage.

A mother myself, I have lived experience in the postpartum world - and I know how deeply transformative this period of time is.

Why am I a postpartum doula? When I was pregnant, a wise person told me that every new mother has at least one ‘thing’ that she has to combat in postpartum.  However, I’ve met so many women who had not just one – but multiple – ‘things’ in postpartum. And underpinning them all was a lack of support.

My goal is to reduce the number of ‘things’ that new parents have to combat in postpartum. So many of them are avoidable, with the right support.

I support new parents across Northern Tasmania. A good listener, a key part of my service will be holding the space for you to debrief about whatever joys – and challenges – come up for you in your postpartum journey. I also enjoy cooking, so I will nourish your body with postpartum-friendly meals and snacks.

Beyond that, my postpartum care responds to your needs and priorities, whatever they may be. This may include caring for your baby or older children so you can recharge; running practical errands such as organising groceries or lightening your mental load by keeping on top of your housework.

When I’m not supporting new parents, I like to spend my time:

reading books and listening to podcasts (mainly – you guessed it – birth and postpartum-related, but I’m also partial to the odd fiction book!); exploring Tasmania with my husband and son; playing cards with my family and spending quality time with friends.

My friends describe me as:

Empathetic, caring and enchanting (!). But my favourite has got to be this description from a dear Chilean friend of mine: “Nefelibata”, which I am told roughly translates in English to “the one who walks the clouds”.
